Some credited the Messenger for swinging an estimated 25 percent of the Harlem vote to the Socialist. Randolph and Owen had made a difference, but it was not enough. Aside from city politics, Randolph and Owen sought to convince their readers to oppose American entry into World War I. Here they were following the Socialist Party line. In 1917, at an emergency meeting in St. Louis, the Socialist Party had resolved to oppose the European war, which had begun in August 1914. But in April 1917, President Woodrow Wilson had brought the United States into the conflict on the side of Great Britain and France.

Reverend Randolph always made sure that the boys had plenty to read, and the family library was small but excellent. Growing up, the Randolph boys were exposed to Charles Dickens, John Keats, Jane Austen, Charles Darwin, and William Shakespeare. Those early days in the parlor and on the front porch had an enormous influence on Randolph. A neighborhood friend, Beaman Hearn, recalled years later that “those boys did practically nothing but read. ”2 Both Randolph boys impressed their teachers. Although James, gifted in languages and in mathematics, was the better student, Asa was no slouch.

Despite Randolph’s and Owen’s best efforts to help Hillquit, he lost to his Democratic opponent. Still, Hillquit polled more votes than any socialist mayoral candidate in New York City’s history.
